Another spread for the ongoing challenge over at the Art Journaling ning. This challenge centered around creating a spread inspired by street art. I love all things with a sense of age and decay, so really enjoyed this one.
I started with gesso, then put down a couple colors of paint spread with an old credit card. Using Paula Phillips baby wipe technique, I put down a couple stencils and then wiped away some of the paint back to the gesso. The look was still to crisp, so I muddied the edges of some of the stencil outlines a bit, and pulled some more paint from around the entire spread.
Here’s a closer view of those first steps:
I then added some magazine transfers, but left them grungy, looking more for texture and a sense of old announcement posters decaying on a wall. In the photo below, the grey areas are where I have started rubbing off the magazine paper.
Finally, I used India ink and my fingers to do the graffiti, added some white paint drippage, and stenciled in some numbers at the end. With this particular spread I was thinking of a close-up section of a wall, rather than a broad view from a distance.
So, what art have you been creating this week?

Love it! Looks exactly like graffiti, such a good job!!
Thank you, Suzanne!
I love the layers and the texture you have created. It feels like a cement wall, well done.
Thanks so much, Krista! i was so rough on the paper substrate that even with gesso and paint layers, I tore through in several spots, but luckily that added to the texture and grunginess.
